Disqualifiers

Automatic Disqualifiers:

  1. You are not 21 years old at the time of appointment.

  2. You are not a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident.

  3. You cannot obtain a valid Washington State driver’s license.

  4. You cannot provide proof of high school graduation or GED.

  5. You cannot lawfully possess a firearm.

  6. Any felony conviction or federal conviction as an adult.

  7. Decertification from any police academy.

  8. Knowingly viewing, possessing, or distributing child pornography. 

  9. Untruthfulness at any stage of the hiring process (including intentional omissions, or deliberate misleading information).

  10. Tattoos on the face, neck, or hands (some limited exceptions for cosmetic tattoos, wedding band tattoos, etc. will be evaluated on a case by case basis).

Likely Disqualifiers:

  1. Misdemeanor conviction as an adult.

  2. Domestic violence offense (regardless of arrest or conviction)

  3. Association or affiliation with any criminals, hate/extremist organizations, or groups who advocate violence or discrimination against others. 

  4. Controversial, discriminatory, or offensive social media presence.

  5. Poor driving history (tickets, collisions, suspensions, lapses in liability insurance).

  6. Unlawful sexual conduct (soliciting prostitution, illegal massage parlors, etc.)

  7. Recreational drug use (candidates are likely to be disqualified if there is not a significant break in time prior to applying.  Hallucinogenic drugs are more likely to result in disqualification than marijuana).

  8. Illegal drug activity (possession and/or sale of drugs).

  9. Dishonorable discharge from military service. 

  10. Failure to pay child support.

Possible Disqualifiers:

  1. Poor financial history (bankruptcies, foreclosures, delinquencies, etc.).  

  2. Discipline or termination from previous employment.

  3. History of alcohol abuse, excessive gambling, or other problematic behavior.

  4. Prior disqualifications from other law enforcement agencies.
